How can I make myself really stand out on a dating site?

I joined one in late december & have found that guys tend to be very, very picky. I am aware that some people join these sites when they are at a "desperate" state--I am not. I am simply a young woman trying to find someone with similar interests/beliefs etc. I am from a (very) small town & its hard to meet new people here. Anyway, there are definitely more guys than girls. So i know they get bombarded with desperate girls just about throwing themselves at them. How can I make my profile really pop & stand out? What should I say for them to realize Im truly unique & not just another pretty face? Any tips/advice on this appreciated..especially from those who have been there done that!
