Why are we intervening with the situation in Lybia?

I know that it's a humanitarian issue, but why are all these countries helping out? Is it simply because we are trying to promote world peace and cooperation? (Obviously the fact that Colonel Gaddafi is committing genocide against his own people is a factor).
