The centenarian tortoise slowly makes his way to the vast ocean whilst the waves pound heavily against the fortified barricade of boulders deterring his prospect of accomplishing his goal. No empathy is given to the tortoise; he simply braves the elements of nature. Similar to this situation, in today’s punitive society, flaws such as poverty and lack of education are criticized and often result in hopeless and sorrowful individuals. Nevertheless, exceptions may occur as a result of an individuals’ character. Undeniably, these individuals develop a profound survivor mentality and maturity as they wander purposefully throughout their life in search of true affluence and contentment. However, although they acquire the skills necessary to survive the world, these individuals are relentlessly facing detrimental obstacles that clearly contribute to their growing adversity. From Mark Twain’s clic novel, Tom Sawyer to Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, a valid attempt to illustrate the trials and adversities of life exist. In comparison, Frank McCourt, an ill-starred yet resolute child, tells the story of his destitution in the Pulitzer Prize winning memoir, Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. Essentially, this memoir tells the tale of a young boy’s trials and hardships throughout his adolescence. Coping with poverty, an alcoholic father, and the hopelessness of his mother, Frank wanders purposefully from job to job determined to find happiness, contentment and America. Hence, Frank McCourt’s stately characteristics in Angela’s Ashes clearly enables him to accomplish his long-term goal in life. Frank McCourt’s profound characteristics which include his fatherly role, survivor mentality, and guilt obviously allow him to succeed in his hopes to at last reach America.
