Does the live-in person have the right to take back gifts if the other dies?

Am dealing with a situation where a live in friend is allowed to stay in the house per the will for a limited time, but it now taking back any items they ever gave the deceased. Wouldnt that stuff go to the heirs? Its no big deal, but very aggravating to walk in and see certain items GONE, given away and in some cases no receipts for tax reasons. The deceased still has outstanding bills.
