He tried to kill Harry because of the prediction that a boy born that year would be his rival. Horcruxes are made by splitting the soul so that a person can't die while one is still alive. He didn't know that some of the horcruxes had been destroyed. He would know about the diary, through Lucius Malfoy, but at that time he was not whole, and very limited in what he could do. He was barely alive. Dumbledore's hand was injured by a nasty curse in place to protect a horcrux. Other horcruxes are: the snake and 3 others that I can't remember. V hated his father because he left his mother and she died in childbirth.
