How safe is it to ride BART alone?

I'm going into high school next year and I'm seriously considering this one high school in San Francisco, but my parents are just worried about transportation. I've never really ridden on BART but I'm willing to do it daily if I do get into that school. How safe would it be to ride alone each morning from Oakland? I've heard it's pretty safe and fast...
